2025 Leo Buring Leonay Eden Valley Riesling

Since 1945 Leo Buring has established a reputation as Australia’s foremost maker of Riesling. At Leo Buring we only make Riesling. It is the grape variety that encapsulates everything we strive for, purity, elegance, time and place and the structure to age gracefully. The goal of Leo Buring is simple; to make the best Riesling in Australia and Leonay is our premier Riesling of each vintage. Each year we source the best parcel of grapes from either the Clare or Eden Valley that expresses the purity, elegance and longevity embodied in the Leonay history. 

The 2025 vintage in Eden Valley was one of the earliest on record. Winer and spring rainfall was well below average, leading to light yields and accelerated ripening. Warm to hot conditions prevailed, making picking decisions even more critical. Flavour development in the berry was phenologically early, with acids softening at relatively low sugar levels. This allowed for fruit to be picked at lower sugar levels than typical, retaining freshness of flavour and acidity.

Nose - The 2025 Leonay shows intense regional expression of bath salts and white florals underpinned with a sweet citrus core. Complex and enticing.

Palate - The palate is flavoursome and layered with pink grapefruit, feijoa, pastille and lime, complemented with citrus blossom and spring bulb floral nuances. The fine, lacey acidity cleanses the palate whilst supporting the impressive flavour length.

Maturation - Fruit was selectively harvested just prior to dawn and transported directly to the winery for draining via miller press. Free run cut was based on taste, approx. 500-510L/t, before cold settling. Only clear juice racked for ferment at cold temperatures with neutral yeast. The ferment was stopped with just a fraction of sugar to balance acidity and heighten regional aromatics and flavour. Individual components were held cold on yeast lees for 3 months prior to stabilisation and bottling to retain freshness and build fine texture.
